1 Introduction

WebRailRoader’s CTC is a computer simulation game that displays the schematic layout of railroad tracks in a particular area. The game features a train schedule for that territory that specifies where and when the trains have to go, including the stations where they must stop. Your job is to route the trains according to the schedule.

CTC was inspired by Softrail’s “Train Dispatcher” (TDP), which was first published in 1997. However, CTC is more than just a clone. Softrail stopped selling and maintaining TDP software and territories in 2012, including the companion program called “Track Builder”. CTC was originally a private project started around 1999 and made public in 2013. Initially, it was only a simulation program, but in 2017, an editor was added as part of the CTC program, not as a separate standalone companion program.

The software and territories are available only online. The software is free, but certain functions and features are only accessible for a fee. Territories for CTC are available in three variants: FREE, STANDARD, and PREMIUM.

The FREE version is free and allows unlimited simulation runs. For a one-time fee, users can get a license to run all territories in the STANDARD version. To run the PREMIUM version, a separate fee is required for each territory.

CTC comes with an integrated EDITOR. With an EDITOR license, users can create their own territory and modify any territory to which they have access to the PREMIUM version. A sneak preview of the editor with limited functionality is available to users who have the STANDARD license for CTC.

For more detailed information, see Section “The Registration Model.” Upgrades to the program and territories are free of charge.
