4.1 Introduction to the Editor

The Editor in CTC is quite different from the TDP companion “Track Builder (TB)”. With TB you manipulate the territory directly on screen, adding, deleting, moving around, which sometimes has some unintended side effects, e.g. breaking up blocks into two or merging two into one (and losing one with everything in it). With CTC the focus is rather on the territory structure, i.e. how the elements are connected to each other. What you see on the screen is in this sense just for your convenience, but it is not driving the changes you can make to the structure of your territory .

The Editor is part of the CTC program, not a separate program like TB. There are quite a few things common what you need for a program that just runs the simulator, and an editor to manipulate the scene, so we decided to integrate the editor into CTC instead of having two different programs. As a benefit, you can run the simulator on the edited scene without changing the program, and you can go back to the editor by just reloading the scene. It is not even necessary to save the scene before running it – after reload the undo/redo function allows you to recreate the editing steps up to any point you like (not available in the demo editor).

As the focus is on the scene structure, you can manipulate almost everything on a very low level. However, it would be tedious to create and maintain even small scenes this way. Therefore a number of tools are available to speed things up. You can create and add track elements by just drawing them, and you can move them around very easily while not compromising the underlying territory structure. You can also change a group of selected objects at once the same way in a few steps. These “Group Editing” tools can also manipulate things in a comprehensive way that would not be possible on a low level without understanding how the scene components work together.

Undo/Redo is available all the way back to where you loaded or saved your territory the last time.

A sneak preview demo of the CTC Editor is available if you have the STANDARD license for CTC. However, you cannot save your creation or edit any existing territories, and undo/redo is disabled.
